The New PSU Took Out the Board.
A tidy Sunday-afternoon upgrade with one costly detail: a new supply went in, but he kept the old cables that were already in there

The translation.
This is the modular-cable trap in its purest form, and it catches careful people. Plug shells are standardised; what sits behind them is not, and makers change pinouts freely between ranges and generations. An old lead on a new supply can hand a drive 12V where 5V was expected. The board's protection dies first, exactly as designed, and the platters turning behind it never find out.

Work out how far the surge reached
Scorching across the board told most of the story on sight, but the real question was how much further the surge had gone — overvoltage can carry through to the preamplifier inside the drive, and that is a different and far worse case. Testing put the damage at the board and no further, as it usually stops there.
Matched board, the drive's own ROM, no shortcuts
A compatible board went on with the original's ROM contents moved across. On anything modern that is where a board swap gets hard: the adaptive values in that chip describe the heads and platters of this drive alone, and a replacement lacking them reads only noise.
Image quickly, because the deadline was genuine
Given the deadline he had flagged, imaging started the moment the drive was alive again. The platters had come through the electrical business untouched, and the read ran at full rate with nothing in the defect logs worth mentioning.
The result.
Full image, full recovery, and the submission went in on time. The surviving old leads were binned with some ceremony, which is where spare modular cables belong.
