First checks on the bench

  • People search 'repair', they need recovery — nine out of ten who type 'hard drive repair' want their files back, not the hardware. We take the word as a question and give a straight answer.
  • The empty-disk trap catches people — laptops come home 'sorted' with the disk that held everything pulled out and thrown away. Always ask what happened to the original.
  • Board faults are the cheap ones — a PCB killed by a surge, platters untouched, is among the quickest, least costly jobs we do.
  • Once mechanically recovered, a drive is finished — transplanting parts brings back readability, never dependability. Anyone who claims otherwise is booking your next loss.

Is repairing a hard drive really possible?

Boards and firmware, yes — genuinely fixed. A mechanical fault is only 'repaired' far enough to read the data with donor parts; no honest lab hands that drive back for daily use. Once a drive has failed, repair and recovery finish in the same place: your files on fresh media.

How does repairing a hard drive differ from recovering data?

Repair sets out to restore a working drive; recovery sets out to retrieve what was on it. Once a drive has failed, only the latter is a realistic aim — which explains why some 'repair' shops return a functioning computer fitted with a fresh, empty disk.

Will a replacement circuit board fix the drive?

Hardly ever by simply swapping it. A modern drive keeps calibration data unique to itself in a ROM chip on the board, so your original ROM has to be moved onto the donor — bench work, not something a screwdriver settles.

Repair or replace a failed hard drive — which costs less?

New drives cost very little; that was never the issue. What matters is the data, so the sensible outlay is recovery onto fresh hardware — and the sensible saving is refusing to pay for a 'repair' on a drive nobody should trust again.
