An Ageing Adapter Probably Shorted the Board.
The Iomega desktop drive is completely dead now

The translation.
Good reasoning, right answer. Power adapters on their way out rarely fail politely; they push unregulated or excessive voltage down the barrel as they go, and the drive's board takes it. The caddy test was proper diagnostic work as well: it gave the mechanism clean power and a different bridge, and the silence that followed proved the fault had travelled with the drive rather than staying in the case.

Take the owner's testing seriously, then check it
That caddy test had already cleared the enclosure, its bridge and both adapters, which was genuinely useful and saved bench time. Testing confirmed the board was pulling a dead short, and that the burn pattern around the protection components matched an overvoltage event rather than parts simply wearing out.
Fix the electronics, keep the adaptives
The shorted components were dealt with and the drive's own ROM carried through the work, so the repaired board still belonged to this particular mechanism instead of becoming an anonymous spare.

With power restored, the drive identified itself normally and handed over its defect lists, which shaped the imaging pass. Its surface turned out undamaged — electrical faults usually leave it alone — and the read finished without difficulty.

Everything recovered and verified against the owner's own invoice numbers. One enclosure and a pair of adapters turned out to hold nothing anybody wanted, and the owner's diagnosis was proved right.
