The level it dies at names the part.

Invisible to the BIOSThe bottom rung. Fail here and the cause is electrical or firmware — board, protection diodes, damaged service-area modules. The data itself is normally fine.
In BIOS, but not Disk ManagementThe disk responds; what fails is the partition table or file-system metadata. That's a logical repair, and we do it on an image.
Detected fine, absent from ExplorerThe volume is there but refuses to mount — a damaged file system over sound data. Good odds.

Put the board right

You sign off a complete list of the recovered files first; only then does the recovery fee fall due. Everything returns on fresh media, postage paid, and the job stays open until you confirm the files open at your end.

First checks on the bench

  • Detection comes in tiers — BIOS, Disk Management, Explorer — and whichever tier it falls at implicates a different part. That single fact is most of the diagnosis.
  • A shorted TVS diode explains most dead-quiet drives: it takes the surge and sacrifices itself, leaving the platters untouched.
  • Swapping a board alone won't work — today's drives hold their own adaptive parameters in a chip, and that chip has to move with them.
  • SSDs disappear for other reasons — a failed controller or firmware panic locks away healthy NAND. The SSD page covers it fully.

A pattern we see constantly: when a drive turns up with nothing detecting it, most of the time the fault sits in the board or the firmware — the parts surrounding your files rather than the files. So 'my computer can't see it' is not at all the same statement as 'my files are gone'.

A WD desktop drive struck silent by a summer storm

The morning after a power cut it was lifeless — no spin-up, nothing in BIOS. A burnt TVS diode and a charred board were to blame; the ROM went onto a donor PCB and a full image came off the same day it was opened.

Bench questions, straight answers.

Is data recoverable from a drive that won't power up?

Often, yes. Failed electronics can be swapped, and the memory chips or platters they sit in front of are usually unharmed. No-power cases give some of our best results on the bench.

Should I let Windows initialise the disk?

No. Initialising stamps a new signature across the very structures that map your files. Say no, switch it off, and have it looked at.

The BIOS can't find the drive — have I lost everything?

On its own, hardly ever. A drive absent from the BIOS can't announce itself — board or firmware — not data that has been wiped.

It failed following a power cut. Just chance?

Probably not. A surge takes out the protection diode sitting on the drive's circuit board — precisely the sacrifice that part exists to make. The board is lost; the data normally isn't.

Whatever has gone wrong, keep it switched off.
