Power Back On, No Drive Detected.

An evening substation fault put a row of units into darkness for an hour, and the desktop that came back afterwards halted at a diagnostic screen reading no hard drive detected. A repair shop had already offered its verdict — the power side of the drive, meaning its circuit board — with four years of invoicing and site photographs sitting somewhere behind it.

The translation.

A cut in the mains is rarely the whole story; the surge when supply returns usually does the real harm. Every drive board carries components meant to blow first and absorb exactly that event, and once they have, nothing on the drive answers at all. What matters is the part a spike cannot reach: the magnetic coating sits well clear of the electrical trouble happening in front of it. A disk that disappears after an outage generally means sound data trapped behind ruined circuitry.

Establish that the damage stopped at the board

Under magnification the sacrificial part had burned through, which is precisely its job. Rather than assume the surfaces were clear, the rest of the board was traced for the further harm a spike can push through, since skipping that gives you a drive which reads for ten minutes and quits.

Fit a donor board carrying this drive's own calibration

A matched replacement board went on, with the ROM contents lifted from the burnt original and moved across to it. No current drive tolerates a shortcut here: the calibration held in that chip belongs to this head stack and these platters alone, and a board without it gives you a disk that spins contentedly and returns rubbish.

Read the surface with the defect tables already in hand

Once the drive powered up and reported itself properly, its defect tables were pulled and fed into the imaging settings. Very little had happened to the surface, which is what a purely electrical fault should look like, and the copy ran through without incident.

The result.

Full image, full verification, returned on fresh media. A surge protector went in behind the desk afterwards, and the bill landed well under what the owner had braced for.

The lesson here: A spike takes the circuitry, not the magnetic layer. A disk missing after an outage is usually far better news than it sounds.
