Find where the fault really sits

Caddy faults and disk faults get told apart first — plenty of 'dead externals', old Iomega and LaCie ones included, are sound drives behind a failed bridge.

Get the encryption right

On WD units and plenty of others, the encryption sits in the bridge chip itself. We lift the keys off that original board so your files decrypt properly, instead of coming back as scrambled sectors.

Clone it, then send it back

Hardware imagers take a sector copy, the directory structure is rebuilt from that clone, and everything comes back to you on fresh media with the postage covered.

You sign off a complete list of the recovered files first; only then does the recovery fee fall due. Everything returns on fresh media, postage paid, and the job stays open until you confirm the files open at your end.

First checks on the bench

  • On a WD My Passport the crypto sits in the USB board — running whether or not you ever set a password. Pull the bare disk out and it looks like static; without that board the files stay sealed. Post the lot, broken pieces and all.
  • Turn down the initialise prompt whenever Windows cannot identify a disk — on an encrypted external, that single click separates a routine job from a lost cause.
  • External SSDs are not exempt: the SanDisk Extreme line hit a wave of abrupt data-loss failures during 2023, bad enough to bring a US class action. Flash is no byword for safe.
  • Sockets give out first — solder joints on micro-USB and USB-C ports fracture years ahead of any wear on the disk itself.

Worth knowing: those 2023 SanDisk Extreme portable SSD faults ended in a class action against Western Digital, with 2TB and 4TB models shedding files out of the blue — and the firmware patch that followed never fixed the root cause. If yours is playing up, get an image taken now.

  • Hang on to the caddy and its lead, damaged or not
  • Pull the plug the moment it sounds wrong
  • Mark which drive it is when you own matching ones
  • Post it exactly as it stands

Avoid

  • Bin the caddy once you have pulled the disk out
  • Accept the offer from Windows to 'initialise' an unknown disk
  • Test it in a different enclosure
  • Point recovery software at a dying disk through USB

Bench questions, straight answers.

My enclosure is damaged — do I post the drive on its own?

Post the lot, damaged enclosure included. Plenty of models keep the encryption keys on the USB bridge board, so without it even a perfectly good drive reads as noise.

The computer wants to format the drive. Should I agree?

No. It tells you the file system is unreadable, not that the drive is blank. A format overwrites the very structures we rely on to rebuild your files.

It worked until moving day — why fail now?

Travel treats drives badly — vibration, bumps and swings in temperature. A drive that was already borderline will often die the first time it is powered up on arrival. We hear that story on the bench all the time.

The enclosure is smashed — can the drive still be read?

Nearly always. Treat the caddy as expendable; what counts is the condition of the drive and its PCB within — and whether the bridge chip is alive enough to hand over its keys.

Whatever has gone wrong, keep it switched off.
