One detail decides whether a bump is nothing or fatal: was the disk turning at the time. Parked and powered down, a drive takes a remarkable beating; up to speed, the heads sit nanometres clear of your files with no room to move. What the G ratings say.

Live or powered downThe specifications make it plain: a laptop-class disk is rated near 300G of shock in operation and about 650G when off. Identical drop, double the margin, purely because nothing was spinning.
Head slapKnock a drive that's turning and the heads slam onto the platter. Every strike can tear the magnetic coating — the layer holding your files.
Full-size drives fare worseCertain 3.5" models are specified down to ~30G in operation — about a solid thump on the desk. Which is why 'I barely touched it' arrives as a real case.

First checks on the bench

  • Running versus parked is the entire difference — the same datasheet, the same model, and hundreds of G between the two figures.
  • Head slap adds up — each time you switch it on after a fall, hurt heads skid over the surfaces again. That first power-up belongs on our bench.
  • Silence after a fall proves nothing — heads slightly out of true, or borderline damage, can read normally for days and then quit altogether.
  • Portable disks are designed for rucksacks, not moving furniture — mobile shock ratings exist because notebooks get dropped; a desktop 3.5" unit never had that protection.

One specification worth acting on: a laptop-class hard drive is usually quoted at roughly ~300G while running against ~650G at rest, and certain 3.5" desktop models sit as low as ~30G in operation. So before a computer gets carried anywhere, the cheapest protection your data will ever have is a proper shutdown.

Is a dropped hard drive repairable?

Repairing the drive is rarely worthwhile; rescuing what's on it usually is. Swapping the heads and imaging patiently recovers most drives after a fall, so long as nobody keeps switching them on.

It took a knock while spinning — how serious is that?

That is the bad version: a running drive withstands far less shock than a parked one, and heads in flight can hit the platters. Shut it down now and treat it as urgent.

Can a dropped SSD be recovered?

Normally yes. Solid state has no moving parts to crash, so drop damage shows up as cracked boards, broken connectors or failed solder joints — electronic repairs, with the NAND untouched.

It ran fine after the fall and failed a week on. Connected?

Very likely. Slight damage to heads or bearings only worsens as the drive runs — the fall set the ending; using it merely turns the pages.

Whatever has gone wrong, keep it switched off.
