Each noise names its own fault.

Clicking, explainedThe actuator hunts the servo pattern written at the factory, can't lock onto it, snaps home to the parking ramp — then repeats. What you hear is that cycle.
Beeping, explainedIn a 2.5" unit, beeping is current going into a motor that never turns: bearings seized solid, or heads lying flat against a mirror-smooth platter.
Grinding, explainedIn a working drive, no two parts touch. Grinding means head against platter, and the magnetic coating carrying your files is being worn away.
The tolerances at stakeA head rides a few nanometres over platters spinning at 5,400–7,200rpm. Damage it and it stops flying and starts dragging. No quantity of grinding is safe.

Inspect before powering

Nothing gets switched on until the mechanics and platter surfaces have been examined. When a clicking drive is powered, it's under our control — brief, watched, never left looping.

Change what died

Dead heads come out and matched donor assemblies go in; seized spindles are freed and stuck heads eased off the surface without harm. It only has to survive long enough for one full image.

Read around the damage

Hardware imagers work the disk gently, skirting the bad zones and saving the frailest areas for last, until everything sits on a sound copy — and the file system is rebuilt there.

You sign off a complete list of the recovered files first; only then does the recovery fee fall due. Everything returns on fresh media, postage paid, and the job stays open until you confirm the files open at your end.

First checks on the bench

  • Clicking is a loop of retries — spin, hunt for servo, miss, park, again. Leave it running and the cycle continues until heads or surfaces fail.
  • A beeping portable normally means stiction or a jammed motor — after a bump or a drop the heads settled on the platter rather than the ramp.
  • Grinding is the genuine emergency — contact is happening, and contact strips magnetic surface. Here seconds count for more than days.
  • Freezers, taps, a smart whack — all myth, all damaging. The single useful step is to switch off and leave it alone.

Why switching off is the entire plan: the read/write heads ride nanometres clear of the platters. With a clicking drive, what predicts the result better than anything else is the delay between the first click and the power being cut.

Bench questions, straight answers.

Is anything recoverable from a drive that clicks?

Normally, yes. A click says the heads have stopped reading; it doesn't mean the platters are empty. Fit matched donor heads, image patiently, and most such drives give back most of what's on them. The real harm comes from carrying on using it, not the noise.

Is the freezer trick real?

No. That trick belongs to an older generation of drives. Freezing brings condensation and thermal contraction into the mechanism, piling corrosion and fresh damage onto whatever was already wrong.

What makes a drive click?

The heads hunt for factory-written servo data, don't find it, park back on the ramp and go again. Broken heads, a dying preamp or scored platters all sound the same — only diagnosis separates them.

Will software cure a drive that clicks?

No. Any software still needs healthy heads to do its job — and aiming it at a mechanical fault drives the very reads that kill the disk for good.
