Cause of loss · corrupted & RAW

RAW means Windows is saying “I can’t read this” — not “the disk is empty.”

A RAW volume has mislaid its grammar, not its vocabulary: the structures describing the file system are damaged, yet the files themselves normally lie right where you left them. The corruption isn't what threatens you — the repair tools are.

The part that failed.

Boot sector damageThink of it as the volume's first paragraph: break it and Windows cannot begin reading. Tiny target, loud symptoms, usually rebuildable.
NTFS's Master File TableA catalogue of every file on the volume. Damaged records throw the 0x80070570 group of errors, while the contents themselves stay unharmed.
Partition table lossThe chart showing which volumes sit where. Without it a loaded disk shows up as blank or unallocated — put the table back and the lot returns together.
What CHKDSK won't fix, and might wreckCHKDSK simply refuses a RAW volume, and where the hardware is already failing its repair passes batter fragile sectors with reads and writes. Structure work belongs on an image, not on media you distrust.

Logged in, checked at no cost Free

As soon as it lands with us, your device gets its own case number. An engineer works out the fault, says what can genuinely be pulled off, then puts one fixed price in writing — no charge for diagnosis, no obligation, and no chargeable work until you approve it.

Always image first

Every sector is copied before a single repair is tried — bad sectors charted, fragile regions read last. Damaged structures and dying hardware often arrive together, and the copy guards against both.

03

Mend the structures on the image

Partition tables, MFT records and boot sectors get rebuilt against the image, where a mistake is free and simple to reverse.

04

Carving beyond the reach of repair

If the MFT is beyond saving, files come out of the image by signature — contents whole, folder structure rebuilt as far as the evidence supports.

Checked, returned, signed off

You sign off a complete list of the recovered files first; only then does the recovery fee fall due. Everything returns on fresh media, postage paid, and the job stays open until you confirm the files open at your end.

First checks on the bench

  • RAW means unreadable, not wiped — image that same disk, repair the copy, and it normally mounts with the contents intact.
  • That format offer is the trap — Windows proposes to cure the problem by laying a brand-new file system straight on top of your files.
  • Bad hardware often sits behind corruption — spreading bad sectors wreck structures as they go, so we image before accepting any disk as 'merely' a logical case.
  • NTFS holds duplicates — the MFT is mirrored and the boot sector has a backup. Rebuilding works from the spares the file system kept quietly.

The paradox of repair tools: the software everybody tries first — CHKDSK, First Aid, the free 'fix RAW drive' downloads — writes to the disk it is meant to mend. On corrupt but sound media that sometimes succeeds; on corrupt and dying media it regularly reduces a complete recovery to a partial one. Imaging first costs a day; repairing in place can cost everything.

EX · SDR-2026-0633CONFIRMED ✓

An unsafe removal left a 4TB archive disk showing RAW

Unplugged during a write one evening; by daybreak it asked to be formatted. A full image was taken, the boot sector and a broken MFT mirror rebuilt on that copy, and a translator's fifteen years of client files came back, folder tree whole.

While it's still with you.

Do

  • Say no to any format or initialise offer
  • Switch it off; open no more files
  • Recall whether it was pulled out unsafely, or lost power
  • Say so if CHKDSK was already run on it

Avoid

  • Pressing Format in Windows, or Initialize on a Mac
  • Running CHKDSK /f or /r on a doubtful drive
  • Aiming free repair software at the original
  • Carrying on through folders 'to see what still works'

Bench questions, straight answers.

The drive is asking to be formatted — do I lose everything if I agree?

A format lays a fresh, empty file system across the damaged one and destroys the structures we rely on to rebuild your folders and filenames. Refuse the prompt; recover first.

What is RAW on a drive?

A volume whose file system Windows no longer understands — normally a boot sector, MFT or partition table that has taken damage. Underneath, your files are usually intact.

Should I run CHKDSK?

Not on this bench. It will not touch RAW volumes anyway, and on failing hardware each repair pass hastens the end. Run repairs against an image, never the drive itself.

I pulled it out and now it shows as RAW — is that my fault?

Yanking a drive out during a write causes this more than anything else, yet the harm lands on the index rather than the data. It's among the tidiest faults to put right.

Whatever has gone wrong, keep it switched off.

Powering a damaged device up again costs you data. Start a case first; diagnosis is free whatever you decide.
