The translation.
Spin, click, click, stop is the sound of a drive attempting its startup routine, failing at the identical point twice, then shutting down tidily. Before it can do anything else a drive must read calibration and adaptive figures from a reserved region of the platters; when the heads cannot make sense of that, it recalibrates, has one more go, and gives up rather than carrying on blind. The months of sluggishness beforehand were those heads getting weaker. Windows merely put a name to it at the end.

Take the failure routine as evidence
That two-click routine is specific enough to build on. It puts the failure at startup calibration instead of at everyday reading, which points at the reserved service area as the first place the heads lost their grip. Examination bore it out: heads worn rather than knocked, on a unit that had been fading quietly for months.
Fit donor heads, then see what is left
A matched donor stack gave the drive back its ability to finish starting up, and it named itself properly for the first time since it began to slow. A head map came straight afterwards, because months of poor reading tend to leave the damage spread unevenly from one surface to the next.
Copy immediately, best surfaces first
You do not ask a drive that has failed like this to come back tomorrow. The copy began in that same sitting, strongest heads worked first, the weakest bands held over for slow final passes. With calibration no longer in the way, nearly all of the surface gave itself up cleanly.
The result.
A complete image, a complete recovery, and the files opened one by one rather than merely tallied. The two-click routine went into the notes and was never asked for again.
