The translation.
The worst explanation is the one that arrives first, and the honest thing to do is test it rather than nod along just to keep a quote moving. A unit that hums, lights up and still cannot be read has three plausible culprits — the mechanism, the firmware, or the bridge board in the caddy — and a shattered platter occupies only the darkest corner of the first. Old enclosures are a weakness in their own right: on units this age the USB electronics tend to give up long before the disk they carry.

Start with the cheapest theory
Nothing was opened. The disk came out of its caddy and went straight onto a bench port, where it span up, named itself properly and answered every firmware-level question put to it without pausing. The whirr that had frightened its owner was a drive doing its job, made louder by a tired plastic shell and heard through a fortnight of worry.
Prove the surfaces really are sound
Naming itself correctly is not the same as being well, so the defect tables and the reallocation record were read before anybody said anything reassuring. Neither held surprises for a disk of that vintage, and sampled reads taken across the surfaces came back clean.
Image flat out, since there was nothing to nurse
The copy ran without a single incident: rate held, no defects logged, not one retry. What had died was the bridge; the disk sitting behind it had never been unwell at all.
The result.
Every page of client paperwork came back whole, and the shattered-platter theory was retired politely, along with the caddy that had put the idea in his head. The disk itself went back to work in a new one.
