The translation.
Long storage is not kind to a hard drive. Grease creeps, parts take a set, and the riskiest moment in a dormant mechanism's life is the first long read anyone asks of it. Because it gave up during that read, the trouble is a mechanism struggling rather than bits decaying on the platter, and Windows calling the disk corrupted is a symptom being reported, not a cause being identified.

No more browsing — image it
Nobody opened another folder. On a drive in this condition every look is a wager that pays nothing back, since whatever matters can be read off the image at leisure and at no risk. Before that, firmware-level checks told us how far reallocation had already gone.
Soft settings, patient timeouts, no forcing
Something dormant for six years earns patience: timeouts stretched out, transfer rates dropped, and scheduled pauses instead of one relentless push. Left to work at its own speed, most of the surface came back cleanly; the trouble stayed inside one band on the upper head.
Mend the 'corruption' on the copy, not the drive
On the image the corruption reports made sense: filesystem records torn where the failing reads had cut them short, rather than files destroyed. They were rebuilt from the spare copies the volume keeps, and the folders came back with names and dates intact. The unreadable band cost a handful of scans.
The result.
The history project, the slides and the accounts came off the image and were checked one by one; nine scans returned incomplete and were listed as such. The old Iomega was scrapped rather than shelved again, its contents moved somewhere that gets looked at.
