The translation.
A lit LED tells you the enclosure is getting power. About the disk inside it says nothing at all. Where the spin-up whirr ought to be, silence leaves three candidates: heads sitting down on the platters, a spindle bearing that has seized, or electronics that never send the motor any power. You separate them by watching what the drive draws on a bench supply, not by hunting for another cable — and the gap between them is an afternoon against a full day.

See what the spindle is really doing
The drive was run from a monitored bench supply instead of a USB socket, which reveals what no laptop can: the motor trying to start, pulling its inrush current, then stalling against something holding it. That one reading cleared the board — electronics that never wake up draw an entirely different signature — and moved the case squarely onto the mechanical side.
Release the heads, then look for the cause
The head stack had come to rest on the platter surface instead of retracting onto its ramp, which fits a plug pulled while the drive was still working. The heads were lifted clear and the surfaces examined for contact marks before anything was asked of the disk, because heads that have sat on a platter often leave a trace.
One spin-up, one full image
Freed, the mechanism spun up normally and the drive identified itself properly. Imaging went through in one unbroken run — no trial mounts, no powering off to check progress, because a mechanism that has jammed once has advertised what it will do again.
The result.
The lot came back, complete and without drama, on fresh media. No contact marks were found on the surfaces, which is the happy version of a stuck-head job; the old drive kept its honour and lost its post.
