Five Whirs, and Then Silence.
On the USB side the drive kept the pretence going — my laptop still sees it and lets me eject it

The translation.
That counted routine is firmware behaving precisely as designed. Start-up asks the motor to spin, checks whether the platters have reached working speed, and gives up after a set number of goes rather than burning the coil out. Five tries and a halt is that ceiling being hit — a motor pushing against something that will not move, while the USB bridge stands at the front door in perfect health, waving. That is why a computer can list and eject a device with nothing readable inside it, and why the eject button is no comfort whatever.

Count the tries, then account for them
We reproduced it on a bench supply with the current on a meter: five surges as the motor loaded up, none of them reaching working speed, then an orderly shutdown. That is firmware looking after its own hardware, and it meant the mechanism had been giving up safely on each attempt instead of wearing itself down.
Free whatever is stuck, then establish why
The mechanism was released and the cause looked for: the heads had come to rest on the platter rather than retreating to their ramp. Surfaces were examined for contact marks before anybody let the drive turn under its own motor again.
One sitting, read through the bridge
As a WD external, it was read through its original bridge board, which is what decrypts the contents as the manufacturer intended. The pass was completed in one sitting; nobody switched it off and came back later, because a mechanism that has seized once is going to seize again.
The result.
Everything came back and went onto fresh media. The question about buying a replacement got the honest answer: yes, and buy two while you are at it. The old drive's five-whir performance closed for good.
