It Beeps, and the Size Reads Wrong.
A 6TB LaCie d2 took to beeping rather than starting, and its account of itself came apart: one minute Bios calls it 5000GB
, the next 2.1gb and asking to be initialised
— an initialise that stopped dead on an Input/output error

The translation.
A beep is a motor being told to turn and physically unable to. Two things produce it: a head stack that has come to rest on the platters rather than parking safely on its ramp, or a spindle seized in place. The nonsense capacities follow straight from that — a drive that never finishes spinning up never gets as far as reading its own identity, so it hands the bridge whatever fragments it can scrape together, and the initialise offer fails because there is nothing underneath it to initialise.

Read the beep before arguing about the enclosure
The borrowed power supply had changed nothing, which was useful in itself: the fault lay inside the drive, not in the brick or the bridge. Bench monitoring showed the motor pulling current, labouring, then being shut down by the drive's own protection — a spin-up stalling, repeatedly.
Free the mechanism, and then leave it running
The head stack was lifted clear of the platters and the assembly checked for the drag behind the stall. The first time they turned freely, the drive announced itself correctly as 6TB — the first honest thing it had said in a month. On a stalled drive that window is the whole opportunity, so imaging began at once and was not paused.
A single unbroken run, then all the rebuilding on the copy
It was read straight through in that one sitting instead of being shut down and revisited; every fresh spin-up on a drive that has stuck once is another invitation to stick again. Only afterwards, and only on the image, was the filesystem rebuilt and the folder tree restored as it had been.
The result.
The archive transferred complete to new media, folder names and metadata intact. His experiments with a borrowed supply had, thankfully, cost nothing that mattered — though they had used up several more spin-ups than it could really afford.
