The translation.
When a drive brings a whole machine to its knees, it is hogging the storage bus with reads that only just limp home. Windows sends a command, sits out the timeout, sends it again, sits again — and every other disk job in the system waits its turn behind that queue. That recovery software could still list her folders was the consolation hidden inside the complaint: the directory records were legible, so the pictures existed and the fault lay in reliability, not in absence.

Call an immediate halt to the exploring
Each hopeful look at that drive had levied a small charge on a mechanism already going under — and seeing the folders listed made it very tempting to keep looking. Firmware-level checks found reallocation far along and pending sectors piling up, which ended the debate.
Limit the retries; let the drive step over its bad patches
Imaging ran under tight timeouts and a fixed retry budget. Where the operating system had sat waiting forever on every awkward sector, the imager noted it and carried on, sweeping up the healthy bulk at speed and coming back later to the stubborn zones by another route.
Lift the pictures, then look at every one
With the image finished, the volume was reassembled and the photo archive lifted out with its folders as she had left them. Files were opened and eyeballed in batches, because a JPEG can sit there at exactly the right size and still be half a grey block.
The result.
The scanned negatives came off the image intact and were signed off once the checks passed. Her computer, no longer left waiting on a drive that could not answer, remembered how to behave like a computer.
