The Shoot's Footage Was Corrupt.

The translation.
The instinct was right. A professional video file is a container: encoded picture data with an index wrapped round it saying where each frame lives. When a write stops early — a flat battery, a card pulled too soon, no space left — the picture data usually reaches the card while the index never gets finished, because the index goes on last. All the footage exists; the directions to it do not, and no player will open a file it cannot navigate.

Copy the card first, deadline or no deadline
The card was imaged before anything else was attempted. A screening date is a fine reason to work quickly and a poor reason to work on the only copy. Everything after that happened on the image, with the card itself set aside untouched in case a second run at it was wanted.
Sort the clips that opened from the clips that didn't
The healthy clips were recovered in the usual way and set aside. The three broken ones were then examined properly: as predicted, picture data written all over the card, with container indexes cut short or absent. That split dictates the whole repair.
Use the shoot's own working clips as the template for the rest
Fragmented cinema video is where general-purpose tools give up — what they hand back, no editor will import. Taking healthy clips from the same body, same codec and same day as a structural model, each broken container was rebuilt around the picture data that had survived, and every result was checked by watching it through rather than trusting a duration field.
The result.
Two of three came back whole and played end to end, checked by eye rather than file size, before the screening. The third lost its last seconds when the battery died. The card was retired.
