Dropped, and Left With a Faint Tick.

Since the fall it just won't open — nothing shows up on the Mac's desktop, and plugging it in raises a tick so faint its owner let herself be reassured: a small noise had to mean small damage, surely? Nothing loud, nothing awful. Probably nothing serious.

The translation.

A diagnosis is at its kindest when it refuses to soothe. Clicking is the head stack hunting for its reference, missing it and recalibrating; how loud that comes out depends on the size of the drive, how it is mounted and how much sound the shell soaks up — never on the scale of the harm. The whisperer and the hammerer are the same patient, and each is spending platter surface on every attempt.

In the lab.

01

Give a soft tick the weight you would give a bang

Before another volt reached it, the unit was opened and the head stack looked over. There was genuine damage, though not much of it: contact marking on the sliders, the platters essentially unhurt — the picture you find when someone gives up early, and the reason her instinct after two attempts was worth more than she knew.

02

Matched donors in, map drawn, only then read

A stack from the right family and generation went in, and a head map followed. Every head came back into service, one of them reading a little weaker than its neighbours, so the imaging order was set by that: strongest first.

03

Rebuild an Apple filesystem as an Apple filesystem

Apple volumes pay you back for using a tool that actually understands them. The catalogue and its records were read out of the image properly instead of being carved at random, and that is what keeps folder structure, filenames and dates intact rather than handing back a pile of nameless files.

The result.

All of it came back, checked by opening the recovered volume on her own Mac before it left. Stopping after the second attempt rather than the twentieth is why 'all of it' is a phrase this case can use.

The lesson here: A click isn't scored on loudness. Soft ones finish where loud ones do — sooner, if you keep going.

Does this sound like your own drive?

The rule holds as in every case above: switch it off, and let a free diagnosis come before any decision.
