The translation.
Once leads and ports are out of the picture, the case holds three suspects: the USB bridge that interprets between computer and drive, the drive's own firmware, or the mechanism itself. From outside they look identical — nothing appears — yet they are three separate jobs at three separate prices. Telling them apart takes a bench rather than another cable, and the least expensive suspect is also the one seen most often.

Work through the three suspects cheapest first
Out of its enclosure and wired up directly, the drive answered the question within seconds: it identified properly, span up as it should and took firmware-level commands without hesitation. The failure was the bridge board — cheapest of the three, commonest of the three, and impossible to see with the case closed.
Image across a link that actually works
With the broken bridge left out, reads ran at full speed and the defect log stayed quiet. The imaging pass was thoroughly dull, which is what a bridge fault should look like: the drive had never been unwell, only cut off from anything that could talk to it.
Put it all onto hardware that responds
Rebuilding the volume from the image gave a clean copy, written across to a replacement drive with every folder left where it was, so she could plug it in and find her scores where she left them instead of reordering ten years of filing.
The result.
Everything moved across exactly as she asked — folders untouched, hardware that answers. A term's worth of quiet dread undone by one small failed component that had never so much as touched a file.
