The Socket Was Always Dodgy; Now It Beeps.
This Seagate portable had previous: the connection has never been reliable
, a socket that wanted the cable held just so and got away with it for six years. Then the complaint changed character — light on, a steady beep, and no sign of it on any machine. A repair shop had already delivered its verdict: internal, mechanical.

The translation.
The back-story was a red herring, and beautifully timed. A dying USB socket gives you dropouts, devices re-appearing and transfers that arrive wrong; what it cannot give you is a beep, since it has no means of asking the motor to try and fail. A steady tone like that is a spin-up shoving at something that will not move. The trouble had crossed out of the connector's territory into the mechanism's, and wiggling a cable reaches nowhere near that.

Pull the two faults apart first
On a monitored supply the drive gave the textbook picture of a stall: current climbing, the motor labouring, then the whole thing cutting out. The old socket fault was genuine but quite separate, and it would have made no odds even to a healthy mechanism, since the plan was always to read the disk directly instead of through it.
Unstick the mechanism, then skip the bridge
The seizure was released and the disk wired up at SATA level, which put six years of unreliable USB bridge out of the picture entirely. That is one of the understated benefits of lab work on an external: the socket that has plagued its owner for years simply stops being part of the account.
One pass, on a link that cannot drop out
Turning again, and hooked up steadily, the disk copied end to end at the first attempt: nothing re-appearing, nothing falling off the bus, none of the stutters that had marked its final few years in service.
The result.
Six years of recordings came back whole. Its owner has at last retired the drive he kept excusing from the day the socket first played up — and will replace the next one before it earns any excuses of its own.
